There are several non-medical ways that you can improve your sleep cycle. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule, pay attention to what you eat and drink, create a restful environment, limit daytime naps, include physical activity in your daily routine, and manage your anxiety levels. You can also improve your sleep with chiropractic care. If you often have trouble sleeping at night, a chiropractor can help you assess the underlying causes that may be contributing to your sleep problems.

NREM sleep, or Non-REM sleep, is the first part of your sleep cycle and includes three stages.

  • Stage 1: For about 5 to 10 minutes, your body is in a state of “light sleeping”. Your eye movement and muscle activity begin to slow down.
  • Stage 2: At this stage, your eye movement stops, your heart rate slows, and your body temperature decreases as your body prepare to enter deep sleep.
  • Stage 3: This stage is deep sleep where your brain produces delta waves (very slow brain waves).

Non-REM sleep contributes to your overall health since during these stages, your body build muscle and bone, repairs and regenerates tissue, and strengthens your immune system. As you age, you don’t get as much NREM sleep.

Many people aren’t aware that chiropractic care can be used to improve your sleep cycle. Chiropractic care improves blood flow in the nervous system and it helps correct misalignment or subluxations in the spine. Subluxations can lead to a stress response that can put your body out of balance and as a result, getting a good nights sleep is difficult. Poor sleep can also be attributed to back pain, breathing problems, and restless leg syndrome. Regular visits to a chiropractic can help improve these symptoms you’re experiencing.
