Answers to common questions about pain, movement, and chiropractic care

For many people, questions about pain, movement, and chiropractic care often come down to one thing: understanding what is actually causing the issue and how to address it properly.

At LiveWell Family Health Centre, we focus on helping patients understand how their body is functioning so they can move beyond temporary relief and experience more lasting results.

Below are some of the most common questions we hear in our Ottawa clinic.

If you have a question that isn’t answered here, don’t be shy! Feel free to reach out to us and ask us anything.

Indeed it is! Proper spinal movement is aligned with flexibility and strength. Having adequate flexibility of tissues around the spine and pelvis allows full normal spinal movement, prevents abnormal force on the joints, and decreases the possibility of injury.

Stretching exercises prepare muscles for activity. Stretching before and after a workout can prevent muscles strain, soreness and help to avoid injuries. These exercises will help improve your flexibility and strengthen muscles. We want to help you achieve better motion, flexibility, movement, weight, health and more. It’s all connected.

Contact LiveWell Health about how we can help with stretching and flexibility.

Every day people suffer from pain, suffering and/or frustration caused by allergies and sinusitis. If you’re experiencing allergies or sinus issues, you’re not alone. We can help, through our proven natural, holistic approach to treating allergies, sinus conditions and much more. Allergies occur when the body’s defence system, the immune system is hypersensitive to a harmless substance, called an allergen, and treats this substance as if it were a harmful or foreign invader.

Attempting to defend itself against the allergen, a substance like pollen, dust, mould, smoke, or pet dander (scales of skin), the body produces an antibody (a type of protein), which results in symptoms like itchy, watery eyes, a runny or stuffy nose, scratchy throat and sneezing. In more severe allergic reactions, rashes, hives, a drop in blood pressure, difficulty breathing or even death can occur. At LiveWell, we treat sinus issues, allergies and much more – all through natural, holistic means.

Chiropractic care in pregnancy is an essential ingredient to your prenatal care choices. A large percent of all pregnant women experience back pain during pregnancy. This discomfort is due to the rapid growth of the baby and interference to your body’s normal structural adaptations to that growth. Pre-existing unnoticed imbalances in your spine and pelvis become overtaxed during these times. The added stresses lead to discomfort and difficulty while performing routine, daily activities.

As your baby develops, your uterus enlarges to accommodate the rapid growth. So long as the pelvis is in a balanced state, the ligaments connected to the uterus maintain an equalized, supportive suspension for the uterus. If your pelvis is out of balance in any way, these ligaments become torqued and twisted, causing a condition known as constraint to your uterus. This constraint limits the space of the developing baby.

Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can relieve and even prevent the common discomforts experienced in pregnancy. Specific adjustments eliminate these stresses in your spine, restore balance to your pelvis and result in greater comfort and lifestyle improvements.

If you or someone you love is experiencing mood swings, we can help. Not through big-pharma drug treatment, but instead using a natural, holistic, proven approach to address the root cause of the mood swings and help the mind and body get on the path to recovery. Most people that have mood swings do not even realize how unpredictable their moods can fluctuate. They can become irritable and unreasonable over the smallest of things and sometimes are quite difficult just to be around. Medical doctors mostly treat these symptoms with medications compiled of chemical solutions that may have negative side effects worse than the symptoms themselves.

These moods swings may be the result of a person’s body missing a natural and needed ingredient. Chiropractors take a natural approach to treating these symptoms through diet, supplements and exercise. Many Chiropractic patients have found relief and can live normal, healthy lives again.

If your pain keeps coming back, it usually means the root cause of the problem hasn’t been fully addressed.

Pain is often the last symptom to appear and the first to go away. You may feel relief temporarily, but if the underlying issue remains, the pain will return.
Recurring pain is commonly linked to:

  • Ongoing stress in the body
  • Compensation patterns from past injuries
  • Dysfunction in movement or joint mechanics

At LiveWell, chiropractic care focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of pain, not just the symptom, so results last longer.

In our Ottawa clinic, we commonly see patients stuck in this cycle until the underlying cause is properly addressed.

The root cause of pain is the underlying reason your body is experiencing stress or dysfunction.

This may include:

  • Poor movement patterns
  • Joint restrictions
  • Nervous system imbalance
  • Compensation from previous injuries

Pain itself is not the problem. It is a signal.

It is a strategy your body uses to slow you down and prevent further injury.

Chiropractic care focuses on improving how the body functions so the root cause of pain can be addressed, not just temporarily relieved.

If pain improves but doesn’t fully resolve, it often means care has focused on symptom relief instead of function.

When the underlying issue is still present:

  • The same stress patterns remain
  • The body continues to compensate
  • The pain returns over time

This creates a cycle of temporary relief followed by recurring pain.

Addressing the root cause of pain and improving function is what helps break that cycle.

Tightness is often a sign of compensation or stress in the body, not just injury.

This can happen due to:
• Poor posture
• Muscle weakness
• Repetitive movements
• Sitting for long periods
• Imbalances in how the body moves

Even without a clear injury, the body can develop tension patterns that lead to discomfort.

Chiropractic care helps identify these patterns and improve overall function.

Yes. Many cases of pain develop over time due to daily habits.

Common contributors include:
• Sitting for long periods
• Poor posture
• Repetitive movements
• Lack of movement throughout the day
• Prolonged emotional stress
• Poor nutrition
• Inadequate sleep
• Proinflammatory diet

These habits can create stress on the body and lead to compensation patterns, which may eventually result in pain.

Addressing both movement and daily habits is key to resolving the root cause of pain.

Posture affects how stress is distributed throughout your body.

Poor posture can lead to:
• Increased strain on muscles and joints
• Reduced mobility
• Ongoing tension
• Development of compensation patterns

Over time, this can contribute to pain and dysfunction.

Poor posture can also be secondary to underlying spinal issues. It is a two way street.

Improving posture and movement patterns helps reduce stress on the body and supports long-term health.

Sitting for long periods places stress on the body, especially when posture is not optimal.

This can lead to:
• Tight hips and lower back discomfort
• Increased pressure on the spine
• Reduced circulation
• Stiffness and tension

When this happens repeatedly, the body adapts in ways that can contribute to ongoing pain.

Our bodies are designed to be dynamic and mobile. Sitting all day goes against that.

Improving movement throughout the day and addressing underlying dysfunction can help reduce these effects.

Many treatments focus on reducing pain quickly, which can be helpful in the short term.

Chiropractic care focuses on something different: improving how the body functions.

This includes:
• Restoring joint mobility
• Improving movement patterns
• Supporting the nervous system

When function improves, symptoms often resolve naturally.

At LiveWell in Ottawa, care is designed to not only reduce stress on the body but also help strengthen it for the future.

This approach helps address the root cause of pain rather than just temporarily masking it.

The nervous system controls how your body moves, adapts, and heals.

When it is under stress, it can lead to:
• Muscle tension
• Poor movement patterns
• Increased strain on joints
• Increased inflammation
• Slower recovery

At LiveWell in Ottawa, improving nervous system function is a key part of helping patients recover more effectively.

Chiropractic care helps improve communication between the brain and body, which supports better movement, reduced stress, and more effective healing.

Some common signs include:

  • difficulty latching
  • clicking sounds during feeding
  • prolonged or inefficient feeds
  • discomfort during feeding
  • a baby who seems unsettled afterward

These patterns may indicate that your baby is experiencing tension or difficulty coordinating feeding.

Many parents choose to bring their baby to a chiropractor within the first few weeks or months of life.

Some come in proactively to support development, while others come in because of concerns like feeding challenges, tension, or difficulty settling.

In our Ottawa clinic, care is focused on supporting how your baby’s body is functioning and adapting during those early stages.

Yes, in some cases a tongue tie can affect how a baby latches, feeds, and coordinates movement during feeding.

However, feeding is not just about the tongue. It also involves the jaw, neck, and nervous system.

Tension or restriction in these areas can also influence how feeding feels and functions.

Some common signs include:

  • difficulty latching
  • clicking sounds during feeding
  • prolonged or inefficient feeds
  • discomfort during feeding
  • a baby who seems unsettled afterward

These patterns may indicate that your baby is experiencing tension or difficulty coordinating feeding.

A tongue tie may be part of the picture, but it is not always the only factor.

In many cases, feeding challenges are influenced by how the baby’s body is functioning as a whole.

At LiveWell, we look at movement, tension, and nervous system function to better understand what is contributing.

Some babies may struggle with tummy time because of tension, discomfort, movement restrictions, or difficulty coordinating movement patterns. If a baby seems consistently uncomfortable or distressed during tummy time, it may help to assess how their body is functioning overall.

Some babies may become unsettled when lying flat or changing positions because of tension, discomfort, overstimulation, or difficulty regulating their nervous systems comfortably. Wanting constant movement or holding can sometimes reflect that a baby feels more settled and secure with additional physical support and regulation.

Stretching may temporarily relieve tension, but recurring pain is not always caused by tight muscles alone. Movement patterns, posture, joint mobility, stability, and nervous system stress may also contribute to ongoing discomfort. When muscles are chronically tight, it usually means they are inherently weak.  Stretching may feel good in the moment but the muscles will stay tight until they are strengthened.

Misalignment of the cervical or upper thoracic vertebrae, restricted movement, muscle tension, joint dysfunction, and irritation in the neck can all contribute to headaches. This is often referred to as a cervicogenic headache, where the source begins in the neck but pain is felt in the head.

Yes. Chronic stress may contribute to muscle tension, headaches, jaw tightness, neck pain, upper back discomfort, recurring flare-ups, and a pro-inflammatory state in the body. Stress affects both the nervous system and the body physically over time.

Stress can increase inflammation throughout the body, increase muscle activation, enhance tension patterns, increase nervous system sensitivity, and cause compensation throughout the body. During stressful periods, the body may have less capacity to recover and regulate efficiently.

Yes. Babies rely heavily on their nervous systems to regulate sleep, feeding, digestion, movement, and comfort. When the nervous system is overwhelmed or struggling to adapt efficiently, some babies may have more difficulty settling and sleeping comfortably.

Some common signs include:

  • difficulty latching
  • clicking sounds during feeding
  • prolonged or inefficient feeds
  • discomfort during feeding
  • a baby who seems unsettled afterward

These patterns may indicate that your baby is experiencing tension or difficulty coordinating feeding.

Neck pain is often related to a combination of factors rather than a single cause.

Common contributors include:

  • prolonged sitting or desk work
  • forward head posture
  • muscle tension
  • previous injuries and trauma
  • degenerative changes to the spine
  • stress and nervous system strain

In our Ottawa practice, we often see neck pain develop gradually due to how the body is moving and adapting over time.

Yes. In many cases, headaches can be connected to what is happening in the neck.

Restricted movement, muscle tension, joint dysfunction, and nerve irritation in the neck can contribute to headaches, sometimes referred to as cervicogenic headaches.

This is when the source of the pain originates in the neck but is felt in the head.

Recurring headaches are often a sign that the root cause has not been fully addressed.

While treatments may reduce symptoms, underlying issues such as tension, movement restrictions, weak supportive musculature or posture patterns can remain.

When these patterns persist, headaches are more likely to return.

Daily habits such as prolonged sitting, screen use, and repetitive movements can place ongoing stress on the body.  Poor posture can certainly contribute to neck problems and headaches but more often than not is a sign of an underlying spinal issue.

Over time, this can lead to tension, reduced mobility, and compensation patterns that contribute to neck pain and headaches.

Improving movement and reducing these stress patterns can help support long-term relief.

Chiropractic care focuses on improving how the body functions as a whole. This may include restoring mobility, improving movement patterns, reducing unnecessary tension, and supporting better nervous system regulation overall.  By looking at how the body is “functioning” it certainly helps identify the causes of patients pain and is extremely beneficial in preventing the problems from reoccurring.
