How Can Chiropractic Care
Help Women with Reproductive
Issues?
Dr. Jason Bercovitch
It is no secret that when you look at health and wellness clinics across the country most of the clients, around 65%, are woman. Women tend to be more proactive with their health. According to the internet – the number one reason women seek the advice of a health professional is for issues related to their reproductive system. At LiveWell, with all our professional services, we are well suited to help woman with all their health care issues.
Chiropractic care, specifically, may support women with reproductive issues in a few direct and indirect but potentially impactful ways, mostly by addressing nervous system function, pelvic alignment, and overall body balance. Here’s a breakdown of how it may help:
🧠 1. Nervous System Optimization
- The spine protects the spinal cord, which is the main communication highway between the brain and the rest of the body—including reproductive organs.
- Misalignments (called subluxations in chiropractic terms) may interfere with nerve signals. Correcting these misalignments might improve nerve flow to reproductive organs like the ovaries, uterus, and related glands.
🦴 2. Pelvic Alignment and Uterine Position
- Misalignment in the pelvis or sacrum can cause tension in the muscles and ligaments that support the uterus. Furthermore, irritation to the associated nerves may impact the function of uterus, ovaries, digestive tract, etc.
- This is especially relevant in techniques like the Webster Technique, which is often used to optimize pelvic alignment and has been associated with better uterine function and even fetal positioning in pregnancy.
🌿 3. Hormonal Regulation Support
- The nervous system plays a big role in hormone regulation, especially via the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis.
- Some chiropractors believe that reducing nervous system interference can support this axis, potentially benefiting hormonal balance—important for conditions like PCOS or irregular cycles.
🩺 4. Improved Circulation and Reduced Inflammation
- Better spinal and postural alignment may help circulation to pelvic organs and reduce systemic stress and inflammation.
- Some patients report fewer cramps, more regular periods, or less pelvic discomfort over time.
❤️ 5. Stress Reduction
- Chiropractic care often includes a holistic approach that reduces tension, anxiety, and physical stress, which can play a significant role in fertility and reproductive health.
- Chronic stress is a known disruptor of reproductive hormones, so any method that helps manage it can be supportive.
🧘♀️ What Patients Report
Over the years we have heard countless stories from women about the wonderful changes they have noticed after they started to get adjusted regularly. Many women who seek chiropractic care for reproductive health say they notice:
- More regular menstrual cycles
- Less pain during periods
- Improved ovulation
- Better stress management and sleep
- Pregnancy after struggling with infertility
📚 What the Research Says
Even though many of the above benefits are anecdotal there is some research that supports its efficacy related to reproductive health. Chiropractic care and fertility/reproductive health is still a developing field in terms of large-scale scientific evidence, but here’s what’s out there:
- A 2003 study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research followed 15 women with a history of infertility. After chiropractic care, 14 of them became pregnant within a few months. (Note: Small sample size, not conclusive, but encouraging.)
- Other case studies and anecdotal evidence support the idea that improving nervous system function and pelvic alignment may create a more receptive environment for conception.
- The relationship between pelvic alignment and dysmenorrhea.
