Chiropractic comes from the Greek word “chiro” (hands) and “practic” (to practice). It has the means to treat a wide array of ailments by manipulating the spinal column.
Today, Chiropractic care has the education and technology to treat many health problems, not just back and neck pain. Chiropractors are also known to promote exercising, stretching the muscles, eating a healthy diet, and other forms of holistic treatments to help people live a better life. Once the immediate issue has been resolved, a Chiropractor will help with the prevention of similar future issues by identifying certain strains that your body is exposed to every day.
Chiropractic dates back to 1895 in the U.S. Daniel David Palmer (D.D. Palmer) performed the first chiropractic adjustment in Iowa on a janitor that was partially deaf. A few days later, the janitor’s hearing had improved. Palmer continued to look to the spine for solving health issues in others. He went on to open the Palmer College of Chiropractic where he continued to teach his theories and practices.
Early chiropractic methods were similar to osteopathy. As such, it was criticized as practising medicine without a medical license and resulted in many chiropractors being jailed, including D.D. Palmer.
In 1906, Palmer’s son, B.J. Palmer took over the Palmer College of Chiropractic. He began to incorporate the use of technology such as X-rays. As well, in 1906, Dr. Solon Langworthy was the first to use the word “subluxation” and published the first ever book on chiropractic called, Modernized Chiropractic – Special Philosophy – A Distinct System. This publication moved chiropractic into the scientific field.
The chiropractic profession has been intensely divided into two groups; “Mixers” and “Straights”. Mixers combine spinal adjustments with other treatments while Straights rely solely on spinal adjustments. In 1975, a conference sponsored by the National Institutes of Health spurred the development of chiropractic research.

Chiropractors have had to battle with mainstream medicine for most of their existence. By the mid-1990s, scholarly interest in chiropractic was growing steadily. This helped to improve service quality and establish clinical guidelines. For instance, recommending manual therapies for acute low back pain.
The belief in health and healing from the view of a chiropractor differs from the traditional medical view. Chiropractic emphasizes the power of the body to heal itself without drugs or surgery. When evaluating a patient, a chiropractor focuses on the patient as a whole rather than just focusing on one symptom or specific part of the body. Chiropractic treatment evaluates the relationship between the spine and nervous system and how the relationship affects your overall health and wellness.
Chiropractors must complete three years of university education followed by a four-year, full-time accredited academic program that includes an internship. To become a certified Doctor of Chiropractic, they must pass comprehensive Canadian qualifying exams to practice in the province of their choice. Chiropractic is a regulated health profession.

Chiropractic adjustment is a manual procedure that is used to restore joint function. These adjustments should only be performed by a licensed chiropractor who has developed their skills during their years in chiropractic education. A chiropractor will usually use their hands or an instrument to manipulate joints in the spine or back. Each chiropractic adjustment is tailored to the specific patient to ensure there is no discomfort.
